Small hand held GPS receiver with easy to read display, electronic compass, barometrical altimeter and serial interface.

The GARMIN Geko 301 is very easy to use, supports multiple languages and has an extremely sensitive antenna, which provides navigation information outdoors, in a car, in a train or even in an airplane (see MapSource examples). The electronic compass and the barometrical altimeter provide additional information for outdoor navigation. The built-in serial interface supports data exchange with a PC.

GARMIN Geko 301

Features:

  • Portable, robust, very handy
  • Easy to read display with background illumination (64x100 pixels)
  • Multilingual user interface in Croatian, Czech, Danish, Dutch, English, Finnish, French, German, Hungarian, Italian, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Spanish, Swedish and Turkish
  • Integrated 12 channel GPS receiver with very sensitive built-in antenna
  • Electronic compass to check heading while not moving¹ (can be turned off so safe power, accuracy ±5°, resolution ±1°)
  • Barometrical altimeter for precise elevation recording², accuracy ±3 m (10 feet), resolution ±30 cm (1 foot)
  • Powered by batteries (2x AAA, last about 12 h) or by an external 12 V power source, e.g. from a car's cigarette lighter (power cord available as an option)
  • Short time to first fix (TTFF¹: approx. 15 seconds after a warm start, meaning there are valid coordinates of the satellites available, or approx. 45 seconds after a cold start, meaning there are no valid coordinates of the satellites available)
  • Supports the following protocols for data exchange with PC: NMEA 0183 with 4800 Baud, GARMIN, GARMIN DGPS, Text, RTCM IN, RTCM/NMEA and RTCM/TEXT
  • DGPS (Differential GPS) ready (GARMIN differential receiver available as an option)
  • Supports more than 100 different datum (coordinate systems)
  • Supports various display formats include the Swiss Grid
  • Firmware stored in Flash-Memory, can be updated by the user
  • Operating temperatures -15 .. 70°C (5° .. 158°F)
  • Serial interface RS-232 (connection cable available as an option)
  • 5 different games
  • Dimensions: 48x99x24 mm (1.9x3.9x1 inches)
  • Weight: 96 g (3.4 ounces, with batteries)
  • Water resistant up to approx. 3 feet (1 meter) for about 30 minutes (IPX7)
  • ¹) In order to check the heading with a GPS, a minimal movement with a speed of at least 5..8 km/h (3..5 mi/h) is required. Where no movement is not possible, a compass is needed.
  • ²) Even though a GPS provides accurate elevation information, the value slightly varies continoulsy. A barometrical altimeter is therefore more accurate, especially when summarizing elevation changes.
  • ³) TTFF: Time To First Fix, time until the first information about the current position is acquired.

Information for navigation:

  • Stores up to 500 waypoints with name (up to 6 characters), icon (choice of 20 symbols) and coordinates
  • Stores 20 reversible route with up to 125 waypoints per route. Shows the current position in relation to these waypoints (direction and distance)
  • Current position (longitude, latitude, altitude)
  • Current accuracy of the position information
  • Current time
  • Current bearing
  • Current, average and maximum speed
  • Trip duration and distance (Odometer)
  • Stores up to 10'000 track points in up to 10 tracks (travelled path)
  • Time of sunrise and sunset
  • Supports metric, nautical and U.S. units

1) The content of this data field is user configurable. You can select one of the following information: Current speed, distance to destination, estimated arrival time at destination, estimated remaining time until arrival at destination, bearing, heading, trip odometer, date and time, location (coordinates), elevation.

2) The content of the 4 data fields is user configurable. You can select from the following 31 values:

1 Bearing The compass direction from a position to a destination measured to the nearest degree; also called an azimuth. In a GPS receiver, bearing usually refers to the direction to a waypoint.
2 Course The direction from the beginning landmark of a course to its destination (measured in degrees, radians, or mils) or the direction from a route waypoint to the next waypoint in the route segment.
3 Elevation Current altitude above sea level.
4 Final Destination Name of the final destination.
5 Final Distance Current distance to the final destination.
6 Final ETA Estimated arrival time at the final destination.
7 Final ETE Estimated travel time to the final destination.
8 Heading The direction in which you are moving.
9 Lat/Lon Latitude and longitude (coordiantes of the current position)
10 Location Location (coordiantes of the current position)
11 Maximum Speed Maximum speed since last reset*).
12 Moving Avg. Speed Average speed without the time with no motion since the last reset*).
13 Next Destination Name of the next waypoint (turn, crossing etc.).
14 Next Distance Current distance to the next waypoint (turn, crossing etc.).
15 Next ETA Estimated arrival time at the next waypoint (turn, crossing etc.).
16 Next ETE Estimated travel time to the next waypoint (turn, crossing etc.).
17 Odometer Total travelled distance since last reset*).
18 Off Course The distance you are off the desired course.
19 Overall Avg. Speed Average speed including the time with no motion since the last reset*).
20 Speed Current speed.
21 Sunrise Time of sunrise at the current position.
22 Sunset Time of sunset at the current position.
23 Time of Day Current time.
24 Time - Moving Time with motion since last reset*).
25 Time - Stopped Time without motion since last reset*).
26 Time - Total Total time since last reset*).
27 To Course Direction to the planned course.
28 Trip Odometer Travelled distance since last reset*).
29 Turn The degrees which must be added to or subtracted from the current heading to reach the course to the intended waypoint.
30 Vertical Speed Current ascending or descending speed.
31 Velocity Made Good The rate of closure to the destination, based upon your current speed and course.

*) You may reset the trip-counters, the odometer and the maximum speed independently of each other.
